System Design · Sharding: the key

Splitting the ledger

Names are mostly A–D. You split A–M / N–Z. What happens?

One ledger got too heavy, so the orders are filed across several books on a shelf. Each tab is a different rule for deciding which book a name goes in, and the load bars show what that rule costs. Watch one book turn hot while its neighbours sit idle.

The load bars and the name list stack on a narrow screen; the book-count slider and shard-key tabs sit above them.

try this Start on Split by letter, read the load bars under The books, then switch to Scrambled name and press Add a book.
