How Things Work · Braking: thinking and stopping distance

The stopping distance

A child steps out exactly where a 50 km/h car would just stop. How fast is a 60 km/h car still going when it gets there?

A car, a driver and a road, all set from the Highway Code's typical stopping table. Every stop splits into the road covered while the driver reacts and the road covered while the brakes bite. The panels show both halves, the speed left where a 50 km/h car would have stopped, and the heat the brakes absorb.

Board: Twice the Speed, Four Times the Stop →

On a narrow screen the three panels stack below the dials, and the table scrolls sideways.

try this Drag How fast from 50 to 60 km/h and watch the speed left at the 50 km/h stop.
