The TCP handshake

How long does a small request take before one byte of the page has moved - and does a fatter pipe help?

Before any content moves, both ends trade introductions, and each one costs half a trip across the wire and back. The ladder plays those flights one at a time, and the clock counts the milliseconds they spend. Watch how much of the wait lands before the request is even allowed to leave.

Three panels stack on a narrow screen; the round-trip dial and the setup tabs stay above them. The two tables scroll sideways.
