How Computers Work · Virtual memory: the working set

The working set

The program needs twelve pages at once. What happens when it gets eleven frames?

One program needs twelve pages of memory at a time: four it keeps returning to and eight it sweeps through in order. Choose how many frames of real memory it gets and which page the kernel throws out. The panels show how often it faults, how much time is left for work, and where the faults land.

Board: Processes Threads and the Kernel →

On a narrow screen the three panels stack below the tabs and frames slider. The table scrolls sideways.

try this Drag Frames of real memory from 24 down to 11, then back to 12, and watch Time spent working.
