02 · DEEP WORK — FOCUS IS THE SCARCE RESOURCE
the ability to concentrate without distraction is getting RARER and more VALUABLE at once. a 'quick glance' at your phone costs far more than the glance — here's why.
two kinds of work
DEEP WORK
focus on a cognitively demanding task. hard, high-value,
rare. produces anything worthwhile.
SHALLOW WORK
email, chat, admin, reactive. easy, feels productive,
nearly worthless — and it CROWDS OUT the deep.
attention residue — switching leaves part of your mind STUCK on the last task
deep task A
glance 📱
back to A (reduced)
residue from A (and the phone) stays stuck → you run at reduced capacity. refocusing fully can take ~20 MIN.
'multitasking' is a MYTH — it's rapid switching, paying a residue tax every time.
= a CPU CONTEXT SWITCH (HCW L08)
each switch saves & reloads working-memory
context. switch too often → you spend cognition on
the OVERHEAD (thrashing). single-task = cache locality.
the economics — why more HOURS isn't the answer
valuable output = (time spent) × (INTENSITY of focus)
the terms MULTIPLY: 4 hrs of true focus beat 12 fractured ones. most people raise TIME and
destroy INTENSITY. fragmentation caps intensity → caps output, no matter the hours.
FLOW = peak intensity
complete absorption. needs an UNBROKEN block,
a clear goal, challenge matched to skill (the edge,
L01). you cannot flow in 5-minute fragments.
protect it — & know your attention is being SOLD
THE DEFENSE (structural, not willpower)
time-block for depth (60–90 min, guarded) · batch the shallow into
windows · KILL THE CUES (phone away, notifications off) not just the urge ·
single-task · ritual + environment · train it like a muscle.
THE ATTENTION ECONOMY
feeds & notifications are ENGINEERED habit loops (cue→
check→novelty). your focus is the product sold to advertisers.
your distraction is designed — not a personal failing. → L03
THROUGHLINE
focus is the scarce input to all hard work. attention residue makes task-switching costly (the same overhead as a CPU context switch; ~20 min to refocus), so output = time ×
INTENSITY, and fragmentation caps intensity no matter the hours. much of it is engineered by an attention economy selling your glances. defend it structurally: block, batch, kill cues,
single-task, train. it's the resource that makes deep work — and therefore deliberate practice (L01) — possible.
