COLD IS A LIE - how your fridge and AC actually work
there is no such thing as adding cold. There is only heat, and machines that move it uphill.
1 - THE LIE YOUR HANDS TELL
Touch the metal leg of a chair, then the wooden seat.
Metal feels COLDER. Same room. Same temperature.
METAL
feels icy
WOOD
feels warm
26.0 C
26.0 C
your hand doesn't sense
temperature - it senses
HEAT LEAVING YOUR SKIN.
Metal conducts it away fast
-> reads as 'cold'.
'Cold' is not a substance. It's an ABSENCE - like darkness,
like silence. You can't add dark to a room.
So a fridge cannot 'make cold'. It can only STEAL HEAT
from inside the box and dump it somewhere else.
2 - HEAT ONLY FLOWS DOWNHILL (for free)
HOT
COOL
spontaneous: hot -> cold,
always, free (2nd Law -
board 01's entropy again)
backwards: cold -> hot
NEVER free. You must
PUMP - and pay in work.
Your fridge's inside (4 C) sits in a warm kitchen (30 C).
Heat constantly leaks IN, downhill. The fridge's whole job:
carry that heat back OUT, uphill, forever. That's the hum.
3 - THE TRICK: A LIQUID THAT BOILS AT -25 C, ON A LOOP
Boiling ABSORBS huge heat (latent heat). Condensing RELEASES it. The machine runs a substance around a loop,
boiling it where you want cold, condensing it where you dump heat. Pressure controls WHERE it boils.
EVAPORATOR (inside the box)
low pressure -> refrigerant
BOILS at -25 C, slurping heat
out of your food
liquid -> gas, cold pipe
COMPRESSOR (the hum)
squeezes the gas hard ->
it gets HOT (~80 C) and
high pressure
this is where you PAY: ~150 W
CONDENSER (back coils)
hot gas meets 30 C kitchen ->
heat flows OUT (downhill again!),
gas CONDENSES to liquid
touch the back of a fridge: warm
EXPANSION VALVE
liquid squirts through a
pinhole -> pressure crashes ->
temperature crashes -> ready
to boil again. Loop closed.
the same ~100 g of refrigerant, around and around, forever
The scandal nobody advertises: this is MORE than 100% efficient.
COP 2-4 (AC, heat pump; a fridge ~1.7): 1 J of electricity MOVES 2-4 J of heat.
A heater can only turn 1 J into 1 J. A pump doesn't create the energy - it just carries it. Moving is cheaper than making.
4 - IT'S ALL THE SAME MACHINE
FRIDGE
cold coil: inside the box
hot coil: coils on the back
box = your food
AC (1.5 ton = ~5 kW moved)
cold coil: indoor unit
hot coil: the outdoor unit
box = your entire ROOM
the drip = room's water vapor condensing on the cold coil
WINTER HEAT PUMP
same unit + a reversing valve:
steals heat from 5 C outdoor air,
pumps it INTO the room
COP ~3: 3x cheaper than a heater
and your body knows the
trick too: sweat = your
personal evaporator
(board 04 - the fan story)
JARGON, DECODED: refrigerant = the loop liquid, chosen for its boiling point - latent heat = energy absorbed/released at
boiling/condensing without temperature change - COP = heat moved / electricity paid - 1 ton of cooling = melting 1 short ton of ice/day = 3.5 kW
THE ONE THING: Every cooling machine is the same four-step heat pump, and its electricity bill
is the 2nd Law's tax for moving heat the direction it doesn't want to go.
