What a Feeling Is For

The board about what moves you. Every craving on it is a feeling doing a job, and this lesson is about the job: what a feeling is made of, where it comes from, and the one way of turning it down that the evidence backs.

The idea in 30 seconds

William James argued in 1884 that a feeling is the sensing of your body’s reaction, not its cause: you tremble, and sensing the trembling is the fear.
The body’s alarm is too crude to tell one emotion from another on its own, so your reading of what a situation means to you shapes which feeling you get.
Sensing your own heartbeat, breath and gut is a sense of its own, and people differ in how well they do it, though the usual heartbeat-counting test measures it poorly.
The stress response has a fast path (adrenaline, seconds) and a slow path (cortisol, minutes); both help in a short emergency and harm when they never switch off.
Rethinking what a situation means lowers the feeling itself, while hiding the feeling lowers only what shows and leaves the body more aroused.
A famous emotion study, the 1962 adrenaline injection that seemed to show people borrowing a stranger’s mood, did not hold up when it was repeated.
