Company Platforms - Netflix / Spotify / Airbnb

Nine boards about the machine three companies each built so their engineers could ship without asking permission, and the one shape all three roads bent into.

Before you start. Infrastructure as Code & GitOps showed you a pipeline that rebuilds a whole server from a text file, and The Assembly Line (CI/CD) showed you the assembly line that pipeline runs on. This note is what happens once a thousand engineers all want to use that assembly line at once, told as the true story of three companies that each built a different road to the same place.

The idea in 30 seconds

A platform is the machine a company builds so engineers don’t reinvent how to ship; it succeeds by being chosen, never mandated.
A paved road is the one supported path from nothing to a running, watched service, with an exit sign for anyone who wants to support themselves instead.
A canary is a small, fresh slice of real traffic a program judges before anyone else sees a change - no meeting, no approval.
A catalog is a lookup that updates itself, so nobody asks around to find out who owns a service or whether it’s healthy.
A shadow sends a real request down a second, silent path so new code can be measured against the old before it’s trusted with a real answer.
Three companies, three starting problems - trust, fragmentation, a monolith outgrowing one team’s plans - and one converged shape.
