No One Is in Charge

A flock of birds bending together as one shape, a line of ants converging onto a single path to food, and a grid of little squares blinking into gliders and copies of themselves: three pictures of the same idea, a whole shape appearing with nobody in the picture drawing it.
Before you start. Nothing technical is needed for the story below - if you’ve watched a flock of birds swirl at dusk, or ants crossing a path, you already have everything it needs. The second half is optional and uses nothing beyond simple arithmetic: adding, multiplying, and reading a small chart of results.
