The Off Switch for You

The Off Switch for You - Anaesthesia
The Off Switch for You - Anaesthesia · Open board

The board draws general anaesthesia as one switch: flip it, the light of you goes out; flip it back, it comes on. This lesson is about the surgeon who first showed the world that switch existed, and the anaesthetist a century later who found out it isn’t one switch at all. It’s four, in four different places in the body, and one of them isn’t even inside your skull.

Before you start. You need no biology beyond what a surgery already is: cutting someone open while they don’t move and don’t hurt. The one habit this lesson trains is checking whether an everyday word is quietly standing in for several different things at once, and you’ll get that habit by reading, not by studying first.

Everything below is about how the drugs work and how scientists measure that - not doses, not concentrations, not anything to act on. Any number you see is a ratio between drug amounts, not an amount of anything.
